RAMCA/VDOT Work Zone Safety Training

Upcoming Work Zone Safety Classes

VDOT has established a mandatory Work Zone Traffic Safety Training Program (The Work Zone Traffic Control Training Program or WZTCTP). This program is based on Federal Highway Administration regulations provided in the Code of Federal Regulations (23 CFR 630 Subpart J).

As of July 1, 2009, any employee of a heavy construction company who is responsible for work zone traffic control planning, design, implementation, inspection, and/or supervising the selection, placement, or maintenance of traffic control schemes and devices in work zones on the State Highway System is required to have this training.

RAMCA holds classes to teach the basic, intermediate, and advanced work zone classes using certified instructors. RAMCA also conducts private classes for those firms who need to train a number of their people and wish to hold a private class at their facility. About Our Instructor

Stanley Michael “Mike” Weakley is the VDOT approved instructor for RAMCA’S Intermediate Work Zone Supervisor and Basic Work Zone classes.  Mike has 50 years experience in Road Work Safety, including asphalt and concrete plants as well Project Management in road and bridge construction and maintenance. He began his career as a VDOT Project Construction Inspector, a position he held for more than 10 years.  Mike’s career continued with positions such as Safety Manager, HR Manager, and Environmental Manager for the Asphalt & Road Construction Industry.  He began a consulting company in 2014, which was interrupted by a position with the Mining Company Iluka Resources, as their USA Safety Specialist. He is also a MSHA certified Mine Instructor.  Mike is also available to teach OSHA 10 and 30 courses.  Arrangements can be made for classes to be tailored to meet your safety needs.

VDOT Basic Work Zone Safety Training

This one day course is required for all persons with duties that include any of the following maintenance type activities:

  • Direct responsibility for placement of work zone traffic control devices.
  • Direct responsibility for field maintenance of work zone traffic control devices
  • VDOT Maintenance Managers

VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety Training

This two day course is required for all persons with duties that include any of the following construction type activities:

  • Inspection of the placement or operational function of work zone traffic control devices
  • Construction supervisory responsibilities
  • Maintenance of Traffic Coordinators on construction projects
  • Regional Traffic Engineering Work Zone Safety Coordinators
  • Regional Safety Engineers (ES&H), Traffic Control Supervisors, Personnel with responsibility for the de-velopment of work zone safety policies and procedures
